Cleaned out the blanket weed and other dross from our small garden pond yesterday (16th March). No sign of the tadpoles that had hatched from 4 or 5 bunches of frog spawn. No wonder, we found the pond contained 126 Newts!! They were a combination of Smooth and Palmate Newts.
CC19C A bit late in posting these as have been trying to get a bit more sorted in my own garden with the sunny weather. But here goes so far from morning walks (in order fo finding, I'm afraid) Taraxacum agg. Bellis perennis Lamium purpureum Lamium album Cardamine hirsuta Erophila verna Ficaria verna Prunus spinosa Cytisus scoparius Caltha palustris Narcissus sp (garden escape) Senecio vulgaris Ulex europaeus Cochlearia danica Viola odorata Muscari armeniacum Pastinaca sativa Arabidopsis thaliana Capsella bursa-pastoris Veronica persica Myosotis sylvatica Heracleum sphondylium Pentaglottis sempervirens Allium triquetrum Anthriscus sylvestris Veronica hederifolia Lapsana communis Cymbalaria muralis Saxifraga tridactylites Hyancinthoides ?x massartiana (these may be H.hispanica, but the hybrid is more frequent. During an 'exercise walk' along the Castleman Trailway on Tuesday 31st March there were at least 6 Little egrets and 1 Great egret in the still partly flooded water meadows to the south, Just below the main bridge a mute swan was sitting on a nest and there were at least 2 singing Cetti's warblers and 4 Chiffchaffs. Plenty of Marsh Marigolds in these meadows too.

Reached the 100+ flowering plants today. I am also recording conifers in young cone form and unfurling ferns (with or without sori!). Fungi as well, but not recording lichens or bryphytes!
Also nearing 100 animals of various groups. Might pit that up when I reach the ton!
What with the sunshine, and the lockdown, Pat and I are spending a lot more time in our garden that we usually do. And what an interesting place it is proving to be! In the past, we have quite often seen buzzards circling overhead, but not so frequently recently, and that is about it as far as birds of prey are concerned. However, a couple of days ago, we saw a bird sitting on the fence with its back to us, somewhat taller than a pigeon, but nowhere near as fat as our greedy specimens. Eventually it turned to face us, looked us in the eye from a distance of 3 or 4 metres and, after about 10 seconds, it flew away. It was only the second time that a sparrowhawk had appeared in our garden. On the previous occasion, several years ago, I had been standing talking to a tame blackbird less that a metre away, when a sparrowhawk swooped down after it. The blackbird dived for cover into a small shrub and, while its adversary was working out how to get to it, my little friend shot away at a right angle, over the garden fence and through a small gap in the shrubbery next door. I would like to think it lived to fight another day! Derrick
A pair of robins have been living in, and near, our garden for a few weeks now. Yesterday They were mating enthusiastically perched on the back of a garden chair; they separated, but within a few moments he was back for more. This morning they had 3 sessions within minute or two. Maybe this isn't unusual, but we are wondering if they'll be feeling as amorous tomorrow.
Took the opportunity before it rained to walk from Hyde School to Gorely Common and back yeaterday. Had the place to ourselves! I have never seen the heathland so dry at this time of year. It crunched under foot! Added a few more plants!
More sightings around West Moors (CC19C) FLOWERING PLANTS; Three-cornered Garlic Spotted Hawkweed, Shining Cranesbill, Creeping Buttercup, Sweet Violet, Common Vetch, Pink Sorrel, Black Medick, Spreading Yellow Sorrel, Ramsons, Thrift, Ivy-leaved Speedwell, Wood Speedwell, Common Comfrey, Red Clover, White Clover, Woodruff, Ribwort Plantain, Common Chickweed, Cleavers, Broad-leaved Dock, Spotted Medick, Field Madder, Hedgerow Cranesbill. TREES; Rowan, Rhododandron, English Oak, Sycamore, Horse Chestnut, Ash, Birch, Hawthorn, Laburnam, Holly. BIRDS; House Martin, Collard Dove, Song Thrush, INSECTS; Large Red Damselfly, Green-veined White and Holly Blue butterflies. Also, Smooth Newts have been seen in our pond. Gerry saw a swarm of bees fly over our garden, they did not stop thankfully.
Cycle ride around Moors Valley heard new birds Garden Warbler, Whitethroat, Cettis Warbler and Reed Warbler, also Blackcaps, Chiffchaffs and nesting Swallows.
Hobby over the garden this afternoon at about 3.15 then a few minutes later a common buzzard was being mobbed by rooks and a crow. Blackbird now nesting in the wisteria after failing low down in the hawthorn hedge.
Our first Siskin on the newly erected feeders! Male in full breeding colours, no mistaking. Got some photos, but through conservatory window. (Mental note - clean them!).
Yesterdy, had what could have been an immature Serin on the feeders. Definatly a finch, about the size of a Blue Tit, possibly slightly larger but smaller than a nearby Goldfinch. All streaky on breast and flank, slight line above eye, no yellow at all. Very short stubby beak, deeper from top to bottom than long!
Would like to get a photo if it comes back, but it was probably migrating.
300 floweering plants reached this week, plus another 10 conifers and ferns etc (which are covered by Stace). birds reached 50 also - not counting the Sea Eagle which I am pretty sure I saw one morning. Waiting for the geo tracker logs to be posted up on line for the IoW birds to see if one went up the Avon Valley at the said time. One has in the past!
Kate saw a Perigrine Falcon on the way back from Sir Harold Hillier Gardens yesterday. Unfortunately I was concentrating on the road!
